The Idea
Alaq Baghdad is a rehabilitation project for the squares and streets of the Iraqi capital, launched in December 2017 with the collaboration of 27 private banks and the Central Bank of Iraq. Naseer Shamma announced the project during the World Peace Day celebrations of 21 September 2016.
With official approvals from the Council of Ministers and Baghdad Municipality, Shamma raised 8 billion Iraqi dinars (approx. USD 7.5 million) from private and public banks to rehabilitate 21 squares across Baghdad. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi issued a decree appointing Shamma chair of the project's board.
Squares include Sheikh Marouf, Antar bin Shaddad, Abdul Mohsen Al-Kadhimi, Al-Faris Al-Arabi, Al-Nusour, Al-Mathaf, Al-Tayaran and many more, with a 200-day delivery window. Final phases extend to the Tigris banks along Abu Nawas Street, Baghdad Forest and the UNESCO Theatre.
