The Idea
Naseer Shamma began establishing the Arab Oud House in Tunis in 1993, and formally launched its first branch in 1998 at the Cairo Opera House with the support of soprano Dr Ratiba El-Hefny. It was the first school anywhere dedicated to teaching the oud as a solo instrument.
Since then, the Arab Oud House has become a globally recognised oud conservatory. Branches now operate in Abu Dhabi, Alexandria, Baghdad, Khartoum, Riyadh and Mosul, with further branches planned in Berlin and other Arab and European cities. Shamma personally supervises every branch.
The school trains new generations of professional musicians on the oud, qanun, ney, buzuq, cello, violin, Arabic vocals and rebab, preserves Arabic musical heritage, and hosts visiting masters. Distinguished graduates go on to join the Arab Oud House Orchestra, performing internationally alongside Naseer Shamma.
